Brendan Gibbons – International Swimmer
Brendan, a long time member of Athlone Swimming Club, is now based at the National Aquatic Centre where he trains with the High Performance Squad.
Competing at a national level since he was a child, Brendan is one of Ireland’s most successful distance swimmers and currently holds three Irish Junior records in the 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyle (short course). In 2011 he was called up to the Irish team for the European Youth Olympics in Turkey and since then he has represented his country on multiple occasions swimming at European events in Belgium, France and Poland to name but a few.
Throughout Brendan’s period in Cornamaddy NS and Athlone Community College he spent many hours every week training in Athlone RSC. Under the guidance of Johnny Powell, one of our most experienced swim teachers and Head Coach with Athlone Swim Team, he consistently attended long early morning sessions before school, evening and weekend pool sessions and in later years, strength & conditioning sessions in the gym.
Currently studying in DCU, Brendan divides his time between college and training commitments and continues to impress at the highest level taking gold and yet another National title in the 1500m at the 2015 National Championships.
We would like to thank Brendan for taking on the role of Ambassador and wish him well over the next year.
