Robbie Henshaw – Irish Rugby International
Another Coosan native and past pupil of the Marist College, Irish International Robbie Henshaw is 22 years old and has being playing professional rugby for the last 4 years.
In his youth Robbie was also a keen GAA player and was part of the Westmeath minor team in 2010 and 2011. In 2012 he captained the Marist College rugby team to their first Connacht Senior Cup in 35 years.
Since gaining his first cap for Connacht’s senior team in 2012, Robbie has played both at fullback and centre with over 60 appearances in Pro 12 and Heineken Cup games. In the 2016/17 season Robbie will be making the move to join Leinster Rugby in the next phase of an exciting career.
At an international level Robbie was selected for the Irish schools team in 2011, played his first game for the Ireland U20 team in Feb 2013 and within 4 months, at the age of 19, made his senior debut for his country against the US. During the 2015 Six Nations Championship he scored his first try for Ireland in a memorable 19-9 victory over England. Since then he has gone on to feature prominently in the 2015 World Cup and the recent Six Nations.
When he does get time to return to Athlone, it’s fantastic to see Robbie back in Athlone RSC training with his old friends. For other gym users and in particular our teen members his presence creates a sense of excitement and offers motivation to all but despite his high profile he seeks no attention and goes about his training like anyone else.
We would also like to thank Robbie for taking on the role of Ambassador and wish him well over the next year.
