1. Start logging your swims next time you are in the water. Whether it’s 500m, 1500m or 3000m it doesn’t matter, every swim will count as you accumulate distance over the next 10 week
2. You don’t have to worry about putting together a team, we will organise that as soon as we have enough swimmers registered – our Target is 12 teams of 12, 144 swimmers in total
3. Teams will include swimmers of mixed abilities and will be made as even as possible
4. The distance covered by each member of the team will be added together and the winner will be the team that covers the most distance over the 10 weeks and final day of the challenge (Sun Feb 8th)
5. You can swim as often as you want and wherever you want, so if you swim outside of Athlone RSC just email us with details of swims each Friday
6. For those who would like to train with a group come along to our Lane Coach sessions on Monday and Wednesday mornings and Tuesday and Thursday nights
7. All Entry fees and sponsorship money raised will go towards the purchase of a Rapid Response Safety Boat by Athlone River Safety Awareness
– Athlone River Safety Awareness are a voluntary organisation and registered charity set up by representatives from the RNLI, Athlone Sub Aqua Club, Water Safety Ireland, Order of Malta, The Gardai and The Boat Club. Their mission is to make people more aware of water safety here and protect people from drowning in the river – in particular between the Weir Wall and the White Bridge.
They have put up signage by the river with Emergency Numbers and at present are raising money to build 2 metal safety boxes – one on each side of the river – each will contain a range of Safety equipment which can be used immediately in a rescue situation.
Their next step is to buy 2 Rapid Response Safety Boats, one for each side of the Weir Wall, that can get out on the water quickly in an emergency. The cost of one boat, with engine and trailer is circa €15,000.
